14 Tips for Wrapping Up Your Work for the Holiday Break

ScholarNet Blog Articles

Even if getting everything on your to-do list isn’t possible before you leave for winter break, you’ll want to be in the best position possible to return from time away, be productive right away, and maximize your relaxed state of mind. A few tips can help set you up for success.

  1. Make a comprehensive list. You don’t know where to start without a complete list of outstanding projects, tasks, and deadlines—plus items that will help you settle back in when you return.
  2. Prioritize critical tasks. Schedule time for the key priorities you need to complete. Reprioritize as you work, moving some tasks to after the break as needed.
  3. Consider your disbursement day of week. If you use ScholarNet’s Central Disbursement Service (CDS), check our calendar to see if you need to make a change to disbursement days over the break.
  4. Submit reports. Don’t forget month- or year-end reports you need to submit. (You may be out when they’re due.)
  5. Delegate when it makes sense. If others can lend their expertise and help lighten your load, share tasks with them.
  6. Don’t automatically take on new tasks. Make sure you prioritize new tasks that come in with a discerning eye. Add them to the list or delegate as appropriate.
  7. Use your usual productivity tips. Use your most productive time for your hardest tasks, cluster similar tasks together, take breaks, get rest, and eat well.
  8. Communicate well. Let others know your priorities so they can work with you to help accomplish them. When delegating, make expectations clear.
  9. Organize documents and files. Clearly label and file documents so they’re accessible for you and colleagues who may need them.
  10. Create status notes. For projects you won’t complete, leave detailed summaries for yourself or others you’ll hand them off to, including key details and next steps.
  11. Set priorities for your return. Identify and block out time on your calendar for key projects based on their priority and deadlines.
  12. Clear your inbox. Respond to requests before you go and delete or file old emails, so you can focus on new email when you return.
  13. Block time for catching up. Set time aside for reading emails, addressing anything urgent, and reviewing your notes when you return.
  14. Set an out-of-office message. Let others know when you’ll be out and when you’ll return, and who they may contact for help in your absence.

Once you leave for the break, make sure you use your time to decompress. That means not checking your email, working on projects, or thinking about what needs to be done during time off. You’ll be more productive when you return if you can take your mind off work during your time away.
